Submit

Musicology Now welcomes submissions on a rolling basis. Individual authors are invited to send complete submissions directly to the editors or reach out to the curatorial team to pitch an idea in a brief email. We also welcome roundtables—collections of four to six essays that cohere around a question, issue, or theme. We strongly encourage roundtable authors to be in touch with the curatorial team in advance of submission. All contributions undergo peer review.

As an online publication, Musicology Now seeks to engage a range of readers, including music educators beyond the university and audiences beyond North America. Authors should not presume that their readers are musicologists. Written contributions to Musicology Now are typically 1,000–1,500 words. The curatorial board is invested in publishing non-traditional essay formats, including audio and audiovisual pieces of modest lengths.

The current curatorial team of Musicology Now is committed to antiracist publishing principles. Through the editorial process, we ask all authors to reflect upon their own positionality, politics of citation, and assumptions about audience. The series “Querying Vulnerability” foregrounds reflections upon racism, precarity, ableism, inclusion, and equity. We are committed to decentering whiteness and publishing BIPOC voices. We invite our white colleagues to engage with the Antiracism Toolkit for Allies, published by the Coalition for Diversity and Equity in Scholarly Communication.

As a peer-reviewed publication that depends upon the volunteer labor of the curatorial team, Musicology Now does not currently pay authors. We pride ourselves on a relatively fast review process (3–4 weeks).

Authors should consult our style guide, which also includes best practices for accessibility and information for sound/moving image submissions, before submission. Submissions will not undergo review until they meet this document’s guidelines.
