Music Writing Reconceived

This series invites contributors to explore alternative forms of writing—to even upend the place of text in publications on music and sound. Authors are invited to explore storytelling, poetic, or personal narrative forms and to build sound as well as still and moving images into their pieces.

Querying Vulnerability

This series offers a site for self-reflexive conversations about precarity, racism, mentorship, and community. We open the series by asking the question: “What does an anti-racist music studies look like to you?” but welcome prods, nudges, and prompts to develop the conversation.

Quick Takes

Quick takes are review-type essays that synthesize and reflect upon a range of scholarly and artistic products. Authors are invited to engage with the traditional subjects of reviews—films, albums, concerts, books, exhibitions—and think creatively about the review genre.

Roundtables

Roundtables organize a cluster of essays by authors of diverse perspectives around a shared question or topic.

Sounding Objects

Music studies engages with processes of performance, time, and liveness that have the possibility to animate objects and emanate lives, stories, and communities out of material items. These essays emerge out of a focus on a particular material object—past, present, or past-and-present.

Teaching with Music

Learning through music happens in many environments beyond the university classroom. This series of essays builds questions and activities out of a track, fragment, or piece of sound, inviting teachers of many different stripes to build discussions out of this material.
